The Sound Cafe, St Davids

The Sound Cafe, St Davids

St. David's Sound Cafe

St. David's Sound Cafe is a choice spot for the vibrant surf crowd, welcoming guests with its quintessential surfboard forecast rather than the usual daily specials. However, don't for a second think the focus here is anything but the food. The Sound takes Britain's notoriously maltreated breakfast meal and transforms it with painstaking care and flare, offering a greaseless fry-up crafted from premium local ingredients. This includes the praiseworthy thick smoked bacon sourced from the local butcher, Gwyn Davies. The asking price is reasonable and the menu grows throughout the day to encompass a diverse range of offerings such as sandwiches, salads, and burgers, along with specials like the Hungarian goulash, linguine paired with a roasted vegetable sauce, and Thai-inspired fish cakes.

Breakfast items are priced from £1.50-£7 whereas sandwiches and full meals range from £5 - £9.95. Find them at 18 High Street, 01437 721717, the-sound-cafe.co.uk

The ham was generously layered on a fresh granary baguette, and the sandwich was perfectly complemented by a thick layer of oniony coleslaw. It's the attention to detail that sets this place apart.

Of course, they have all the deli essentials like olives, cheeses, and meats, as well as delightful treats like savoury bakes and sausage rolls. While the sausage rolls might've looked a bit tired, the friendly and knowledgeable staff more than make up for it with their warm and engaging service.

Gianni di Lorenzo, with his traditional Italian flair, whips up an assortment of ice-creams - made fresh daily - using organic milk from Caerfai Farm in St David's (£2.10-£5). The flavors range from the classics to the adventurous such as lambrusco, cherry brandy, and strawberries and cream. While it might not match Rome or Naples' gelato perfection, the Bench's ices are uniquely delectable with distinct freshness and a creamy texture that sets it apart from your average ice-cream scoop.
For more affordable options, they also offer sandwiches ranging from £2.35-£3.95. To discover more, visit High Street or call 01437 721948. You can also explore their offerings on stdavidsfoodandwine.co.uk.

The Cambrian safeguards regional produce, leading to the supply of quality options like haddock, hake, lemon sole or cod when requesting their popular fish and chips. As a gastronomic hub, the Cambrian balances simplicity with excess, demonstrated through their Steak and Guinness pie enriched with local cheese. The hearty, creamy and meat-filled pie paired with exceptional chips builds a satisfying meal. The addition of rosemary to the suet crust, however, can seem overpowering to some. Notably, the Cambrian appreciates their ale connoisseurs, offering a bottle of Welsh Tomos Watkin's ale at a modest price of £3.30, setting an example for the current restaurant industry.
The affordable options start with sandwiches at £4.95, whilst main courses begin from £7.95. Located at 6 Main Street, you can get in touch on 01437 721210, or visit thecambrianinn.co.uk

Bristol Trader, Haverfordwest

Bristol Trader, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire

The Bristol Trader, though serving traditional pub grub, stands out among the top budget restaurants and cafes in Pembrokeshire. While the extensive menu may have its ups and downs, the venue takes pride in sourcing fresh ingredients and cooking on-site, setting it apart from other pubs in its category. By choosing wisely, diners can enjoy flavorful dishes here while keeping their wallets happy with change to spare.

For a unique dining experience, check out Winston Bynorth's photograph capturing the ambiance of the Bristol Trader.

Highlighting Pembrokeshire's local favorite, the faggots, my tasting plate did not disappoint. These delectable morsels are from Narberth's well-regarded butcher, Andrew Rees, showcasing a distinct yet enjoyable liver-like flavor. However, the accompanying gravy lacked memorable nuances while the mashed potatoes were reminiscent of good homemade quality. With an appealing price tag of £7.25, there's really not much for one to grumble about. Further, there are more economical options available, like the Trader's "simple pleasures" menu. This features a plate of the acclaimed Preseli Gold sausages and fries, all for the modest sum of £3.95. Food is served until the late evening, 8.30pm. Situated by the scenic river, the otherwise nondescript pub is a preferred spot during the warm summer months. However, beer enthusiasts may have their hopes deflated after spotting the rather limited selection of Worthington's, Abbot Ale, and Speckled Hen (priced from £2.80 a pint).
For main dishes and salads, prices vary between £7.25 and £9.50. Situated on Quay Street, 01437 762122, bristoltrader.net

While it isn't entirely devoid of meat, most of the menu favours vegetarians, featuring enticing salads like goat's cheese with pear and chilli, and daily specials like sizzling vegetable fajitas, or spinach and feta pie. A unique salad offering pairs halloumi and sliced beetroot, dressed with lime and chili. Priced at £8.95, its presentation may be a bit restrained, but it's a flavorful ensemble waiting to be unravelled. The robust saltiness of the halloumi deftly contrasts the subdued dressing, curiously bringing out the sweet side of the beetroot. The diverse menu also offers quiches, frittatas, filled baguettes and more.
Takeout options include baguettes, meal boxes and salads, ranging from £2.50-£7. In-house dining prices lie between £5-£9.50. Visit them at 2A St. James' Street or call on 01834 862762.plumvanilla.com
